In this edition of the Digital Zone, we talked about:

        * iPhone 4 class action lawsuit
        * iPhone 4 catches fire
	* iPhone 4 patch won't fix antenna problem
	* Blackberry owns phone OS wars

A federal judge says a monopoly abuse lawsuit against Apple and AT&T's mobile phone unit can move forward with a class action status. The lawsuit consolidates several filed by iPhone buyers starting in late 2007, a few months after the first generation of Apple's iPhone went on sale. An amended complaint filed in June 2008 takes issue with Apple's practice of "locking" iPhones so they can only be used on AT&T's network, and its absolute control over what applications iPhone owners can and cannot install on the gadgets. The lawsuit also says Apple secretly made AT&T its exclusive iPhone partner in the U.S. for five years. Consumers agreed to two-year contracts when they purchased their phones, but were in effect locked into a five-year relationship with AT&T, the lawsuit argued. The actions hurt competition and drove up prices for consumers, the lawsuit claims. In court documents filed July 8, Judge James Ware of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California said parts of the lawsuit that deal with violations to antitrust law can continue as a class action. The class includes anyone who bought an iPhone with a two-year AT&T agreement since the device first went on sale in June 2007. The judge dismissed other claims against Apple, among them allegations that the company broke laws when an update to the iPhone's operating software caused some phones to stop working and deleted programs that users had purchased. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to keep Apple from selling locked iPhones in the U.S. and from determining what iPhone programs people can install. It also seeks damages to cover legal fees and other costs.

In an exclusive story on the Boy Genius Report, a flamed-out iPhone 4 was returned because "the brand new iPhone 4 caught on fire while being hooked up to a computer using the Apple USB cable that accompanied the device." Neither AT&T nor the Boy Genius had seen a flaming iPhone before. In the comments section of the Boy Genius post, blogger Carlos Martins wrote the following: "A couple days ago, while doing a UStream from my iPhone 4 I had to plug it to charge it (while streaming), and in a couple of minutes I got my first ever 'excess temperature' warning – with the iPhone entering safe mode! Yesterday, as I plugged it to charge at night like usual, it began heating up seriously!" The Boy Genius Report said that "an Apple Store did confirm to our AT&T connection that this did appear to be a defective USB port and not some sort of user error." The damage to the phone was severe and it did slightly burn the owners hand, according to the story. "The USB port in the phone was slightly melted and the cord was badly melted."

An upcoming firmware patch to address what Apple is calling a miscalculation in the iPhone 4's signal-strength formula won't solve connection problems. Apple finally said that the iPhone 4's signal drops more than the usual amount and is blaming the problem on an incorrect formula that displays the signal strength too high.</itunes:summary>

	* Apple's signal strength
	* iPhone 4 manufacturing costs
	* Microsoft's next of "Kin"
	* Windows 7 sales
	* YouTube serves video like no other
	* Google scores huge legal victory
	* Chrome making their move
	* Government to nearly double wireless spectrum

Apple said that it was "stunned" to find that its iPhones have for years been using a "totally wrong" formula to determine how many bars of signal strength they are getting. They said that's the reason there's been widespread complaints from users that the iPhone 4 can show a sudden plunge in signal strength when they hold it in a way that covers a small black strip on one edge of the phone. Apple said the drop seems exaggerated because the phone can wrongly display four or five bars of signal strength when it shouldn't. The company said it will fix the formula to one recommended by AT&T through a free software update within a few weeks for iPhone models, 3G, 3GS and 4. However, the "wrong" formula goes back as far as the original iPhone, launched in 2007. Apple also said they'll make bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

Apple's new iPhone 4 costs almost $20 more to make than its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS, according to research group iSuppli. iSuppli estimated the cost of the parts total $187.51. That's more than the $170.80 iSuppli estimates for the cost of the materials inside the iPhone 3GS. The estimate doesn't include manufacturing, software, marketing and other costs. The most expensive part of the iPhone 4 is the new, higher-resolution LCD screen, which iSuppli estimates carries a cost of $28.50. Flash memory, which has been in short supply, costs $27. Apple's processor, which was manufactured by Samsung, according to iSuppli, costs $10.75, and the capacitive touch screen costs $10.

Microsoft said it is killing the Kin line of mobile phone it unveiled in April. The company said it made the decision to focus on the Windows Phone 7 launch and will not ship Kin in Europe this fall as planned. Microsoft added that it will continue to work with Verizon to sell Kin smartphones that have already been made.

Sales of Windows 7 have reached about 150 million licenses -- or about seven copies of Windows 7 sold every second and said about 75 percent of all enterprises are "looking at Windows 7 for their organization." Earlier this month, Microsoft said that more than 100 million licenses had been sold in the first six months of the operating system's release, which was in October. Last Thursday, Microsoft released a beta of Windows Live Essentials. The company also said that an overwhelming majority of Windows 7 users approve of the new OS, with about 90 percent rating it as excellent, very good, or good.

Google served up a record number of video clips in May to U.S. Internet users, mostly through YouTube and said each Google visitor watched an average of more than 100 clips during the month, according to comScore. Almost 183 million U.S. residents watched online video during the month, with 14.6 billion video clips viewed at Google sites, primarily YouTube. That's a record for Google, which also nabbed 43.1 percent of all online video clips served up during the month. Hulu came in a distant second place, with 1.2 billion video clips, or 3.5 percent of the total,</itunes:summary>

	* Apple reports stellar sales of iPhone 4
	* iPhone 4 'Death Grip'

Apple said it sold more than 1.7 million units of its new iPhone 4 model in the first three days, making it the most successful product launch in the company's history from a sales standpoint. Some stores sold out within hours. Analysts have said Apple is having a hard time procuring enough parts for the phone. Apple said the white iPhone it plans to produce has been more challenging than expected and won't be available until late July so only the black models are available right now.

Amazon said it added a new video feature to the software that lets people read Kindle books on Apple gadgets. The newest version of Amazon's app can now play video and audio clips embedded in e-books. Amazon also said that the iPhone Kindle app has also been optimized for the new higher-resolution screen on Apple's iPhone 4.

More than 600,000 iPhone 4s were sold on the first day of pre-orders last week. The volume was so great that AT&T had to suspend its online sales and Apple had to delay ship dates because Apple is having a difficult time getting enough touchscreens to meet demand. Apple has had to cut by 50 percent the number of iPhones it can deliver monthly from the original estimate of four million. LG Display Company, Apple's supplier, is hoping to have the capacity to meet demand by late summer. The iPhone 4 is scheduled to go on sale on June 24 and in-person pre-orders are being accepted at brick-and-mortar Apple and AT&T stores, Radio Shack, Best Buy, and some Wal-Marts. Apple said it is the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day. Apple noted that "many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration." AT&T reported that its pre-order sales were 1,000 percent more than pre-orders for the iPhone 3GS in 2009. Late last week, Apple said it will ship iPhones purchased through pre-orders by July 2 instead of the original date of June 24, but they're now saying July 14. Plus, there were reports that visitors to the AT&T site were seeing other customers' accounts during the iPhone 4 pre-order process and there were reports that, in some cases, customer information was accepted, but no pre-order was completed. AT&T said it has not been able to duplicate the problems and that, in any case, revealed information did not include Social Security numbers, credit-card information, or call-detail records. Analysts have put a "buy" rating on Apple's stock and expect the stock to start trading near $340 a share. Last week the stock reached an all-time high of $272.90

Verizon Wireless announced that their new Droid X smartphone is shipping on June 23. According to Verizon's site, the Droid X has a 4.3-inch screen, HDMI output and a "720p display" and will run Adobe Flash 10.1. According to Engadget, the device has an 854-by-480 screen, an 8-megapixel camera and no physical keyboard.

Toshiba said they now have a chip that can store 128 gigabytes of memory, for use in smartphones, tablet PCs and digital video cameras. Mass production will start in October 2010 and said they'll also offer a 64GB chip too.

Verizon Wireless is considering a tiered 4G pricing plan based on data usage according to the company's chief financial officer and said they won't offer a "totally unlimited, flat rate." The Verizon spokesperson said the pricing changes don't pertain to 3G users for the foreseeable future. Verizon said they're expecting an "explosion of data traffic" from new smartphones.

Verizon is offering its FiOS television and broadband Internet package to new customers without a long-term contract. Verizon had previously charged $20 more per month for the no-contract service. Now, new FiOS customers will be able to get contract-free service at the regular price of $99 per month, plus taxes and fees. Existing customers, however,</itunes:summary>

	* AT&T stops unlimited data plan
	* Let the iPhone HD search begin
	* Nokia rechargeable phones
	* Foxconn employees getting a raise
	* The best CEO in America

AT&T is stopping new customers from signing up for its unlimited Internet data plan for smart phones and iPads and will start charging more for users who hog the most bandwidth. Current subscribers will be able to keep their $30-per-month unlimited plans, even if they renew their contracts. However, new customers will have to choose one of two new data plans for all smart phones, including iPhones and BlackBerrys. One of the new AT&T plans will cost $25 per month and offer two gigabytes of data per month, which AT&T says will be enough for 98 percent of its smart phone customers. Additional gigabytes will cost $10 each. A second plan will cost $15 per month for 200 megabytes of data, which AT&T says is enough for 65 percent of its smart phone customers. If they go over, they'll pay another $15 for 200 more megabytes. A gigabyte is enough for hundreds of e-mails and Web pages, but it's quickly eaten up by Internet video and videoconferencing. The 200 megabytes offered under the $15 plan is enough for more than 1,000 e-mails, hundreds of Web pages and about 20 minutes of streaming video, AT&T says. The limits will apply only on AT&T's cellular networks. Data usage over Wi-Fi networks, including AT&T's public Wi-Fi "hot spots," will not count toward the limits. AT&T says they'll let customers track their usage online and the iPhone also has a built-in usage tracking tool. Plus, AT&T will also text subscribers to let them know they're getting close to their limits. For the iPad, the new $25-per-month plan will replace the $30 unlimited plan. iPad owners can keep the old unlimited plan as long as they keep paying $30 per month.

A San Mateo court has ordered the go-ahead for a search of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's computers. The court is specifically said to have appointed a "special master" for the task, who will be limited to collecting details related to Gizmodo's $5,000 purchase of an iPhone prototype. The "special master" is an unpaid agent, typically a former judge or law professor acting as a volunteer. To keep the data's use in check, the results of the search will first be sent to a judge, and then to Chen and his lawyers so they can make any objections. Only after the judge rules on the objections will the district attorney be given access to a whittled-down set of search findings. The process could take up to two months. The results could be critical in the case because Steve Jobs is saying the phone may have been stolen out of the engineer's bag, rather than simply found. Investigators considered journalistic shield laws before raiding Chen's home and a search of the editor's computers was initially held off for this reason. An agreement with Chen's attorney Thomas Nolan was reached about how the computers could be searched.

Foxconn announced it is raising the pay of its workers by 30 percent. The basic salary at Foxconn's China plants is $130 per month. Foxconn had been considering a 20% raising pay for months to cope with a labor shortage. Ten workers have killed themselves and three have attempted suicide at Foxconn's operations in southern China this year, involving workers who jumped from buildings.</itunes:summary>

According to a Pew Internet & American Life Project, the study found that young people are most likely to limit their personal information online — and the least likely to trust free online services ranging from Facebook to LinkedIn and MySpace. The study shows that this generation, accused of sharing too much information online, is actually leading the pack in online privacy. Social networkers ages 18 to 29 were the most likely to change the privacy settings on their profiles to limit what they share with others online. The percentage who did so was 71 percent, compared with just 55 percent of the 50- to 64-year-old bracket. Meanwhile, about two-thirds of all social networkers who were surveyed said they've tightened security settings. About half of young people in that 18-29 bracket have deleted comments that others have made on their profile, compared with just 29 percent of those ages 30 to 49 and 26 percent of 50- to 64-year-olds. The numbers were similar when it came to social networkers who removed their names from photos that were tagged to identify them. When asked how much they can trust social networking sites, 28 percent of the youngest adults surveyed said "never."

Google has released a list of the top 1000 websites in the world, raking the Facebook social networking site as the leading site based on the number of unique users. According to Google's AdPlanner stats, Facebook scores more than 540 million unique visitors per month. Facebook not only has the most unique visitors in Google's stats, but also the most page views per month, a whopping 570 billion views, ahead of other properties like Craigslist (#49) with 14 billion views. The AdPlanner list does not contain any figures for most of Google's own properties, like YouTube, Gmail, News, or Search, but gives an interesting insight into which top Websites do not serve advertising. Wikipedia (#4) and Mozilla (#10) are the only two Websites in Google's top 10 not to display advertising. A noteworthy entry on the 18th spot in the AdPlanner rankings is Twitter (#18), with 98 million unique visitors per month, which doesn't serve ads. Destinations portals such as Yahoo.com (#2), MSN.com (#5), Baidu (#8), Sina.com.cn (#11) and 163.com (#15) are also high on the list, probably due to the fact that many people use these sites as their home page. Search engines also occupy several top places in the AdPlanner list (excluding Google's own Search). Live.com (#2) has over 370 million uniques per month, Bing.com (#13) with 110 million, and Ask.com (#20) with 88 million.
Blogging is also high on Google's list, with Blogspot (Blogger) situated in the 7th place with 230 million uniques, and WordPress.com in the 12th spot with 120 million uniques. Several news sources made it into the top 100 as well: Cnet.com ranks as #35, BBC.co.uk on #43, CNN.com at #64, and NYTimes.com on #83. Other entries worth noting among Google's top 1000 websites are Microsoft.com (#6), Adobe.com (#14), Amazon.com (#22), eBay.com (#24), Apple.com (#27) and Hotmail.com (#30).

Apple surpassed Microsoft last week, in terms of market value,</itunes:summary>

AT&T says it is raising the penalty for canceling a new two-year smartphone contract early to $325 starting June 1, according to the Wall Street Journal. At the same time, AT&T will lower the early termination fee for its less advanced "feature" phones to $150, from $175. Verizon raised their early termination fee about six months. An AT&T spokesman said the hike is "unrelated to any device announcement or future plans."

Android sales jumped 707 percent during the first quarter of 2010, and now exceed sales of Windows Mobile devices around the world, according to Gartner. Worldwide mobile phone sales grew 17 percent in the first quarter to 314.7 million units. Of those, 54.3 million were smartphones, a 48.7 percent jump from the same period one year ago. Symbian is the overall leader with 44.3 percent market share (down from 48.8 in Q1 2009). BlackBerry OS devices come in second at 19.4 percent (down slightly from 20.6), while iPhone comes in third at 15.4 percent (up from 10.5 percent). Android is now in fourth place at 9.6 percent (up from just 1.6 percent in Q1 2009), while Windows Mobile takes fifth place at 6.8 percent (down from 10.2 percent).

HP has expanded their battery recall and is now recalling 124,000 batteries after receiving additional reports of overheating, battery ruptures, and injuries from users. The affected batteries include those found in HP and Compaq laptops (or purchased separately) between August of 2007 and July of 2008. More information about the recall is on HP.com.

WWDC kicks off on June 7 and according to one of Steve Jobs' email messages, he's telling an iPhone user that "you won't be disappointed." The keynote address will be 10 a.m. Pacific time and Jobs will deliver the keynote. In another email a Gizmodo reader asked Jobs whether Google was "surpassing" Apple. His response, "Not a chance."

If you're in the market for luxury iPhone and iPod Touch accessories, you can now purchase the Calypso CrystalDock which is made of lead crystal glass. The CrystalDock comes in four models: The limited edition Aurora which costs $349. The Beau, Celestia, and Dune models are $199 each and feature different patterns carved into them. The company also sells a pair of $1,000 Harman Kardon crystal computer speakers.

Google paid $750 million to buy AdMob and the Federal Trade Commission said it unanimously decided to approve the deal because of Apple's entry into the mobile advertising market. Apple attemped to by AdMob late last year but Google came in with a higher offer at the last minute. Google said it will take over AdMob within the next few weeks. The FTC spent a year examining Google's $3.2 billion acquisition of online ad service DoubleClick before approving the deal in March 2008. Google and AdMob will have a 21 percent share of the U.S. mobile ad market according to International Data Corp.

In this edition of the Digital Zone, we talked about:

	* Nokia goes after Apple again
	* Six more months for AT&T
	* New iPhone 4.0 features
	* WWDC sells out
	* Android phones making their move
	* Nintendo missing their sales targets
	* Windows 2000, XP support disappearing
	* Yahoo attacks Google

Nokia said it has extended its patent-infringement claims against Apple to include the iPad. The lawsuits by Nokia claim that a broad swath of Apple products violate Nokia patents and says the the disputed technologies help reduce the size and cost of electronic gadgets. In this case, technologies that makes voice and data communications more efficient, which allows the devices to be more compact. Apple countersued in last December saying Nokia "copy the iPhone" in order to recapture its share of the high-end phone market.

According to an analyst at BroadPoint AmTech, AT&T is getting a six-month extension on its exclusivity deal for the iPad and iPhone in exchange for giving iPad users a break on its usual 3G data rates without a contract. Translation, Apple products won't arrive at Verizon until 2011.

The latest iteration of the iPhone operating system scheduled for public release this summer will supposedly offer new features such as file sharing, orientation screen lock, new iPod controls, HD video capture and a simplified method for killing apps running in the background. MacRumors is reporting that the latest version of the iPhone OS 4.0 SDK may be able to record high-definition video and may allow applications to capture video at 1280x720 resolution. Boy Genius is reporting the latest beta of iPhone OS 4.0 will allow you to share files between your computer and your iPhone through the iTunes interface. All a person needs to do is connect a handset to the computer, select your iPhone in the left hand column of iTunes under 'Devices,' click on the 'Apps' tab and scroll down to 'File Sharing.' Moreover, the latest beta release allows users to lock the screen orientation so that the iPhone screen won't switch between landscape and portrait mode. Sitting alongside the new orientation lock will be a set of regular iPod controls including play/pause, move forward, move back, and an iPod application icon.

Apple’s WWDC has sold out for the third year in a row. The $1,595 tickets for WWDC 2010, which jumped in price by $300 over last year, sold out in just eight days.

The NPD Group published results from the first quarter of 2010 which reveals that Google's Android-based smartphones outsold the iPhone for the first time in the U.S. According to their data, Android-based phones accounted for 28% of smartphone sales while the iPhone accounted for 21%. Meanwhile, RIM remains the market leader at 36%. NPD attributes the growth to strong promotion as well as broader carrier coverage for Android devices. The iPhone is currently sold only by AT&T. While AT&T does make up 32% of the smartphone market, they are the only provider that offers the iPhone at this time. Verizon (30%), T-Mobile (17%) and Sprint (15%) make up the bulk of the rest of the market.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Wii are continuing to drop and is consistently missing sales targets. Nintendo is now focusing on its upcoming 3-D DS handheld console that requires no 3D glasses.

Microsoft will end support for Windows 2000 (desktop and server) and Windows XP SP2 on July 13. However,</itunes:summary>

Police have identified the person who obtained the prototype iPhone 4G, but that may or may not be the person who sold it to Gizmodo. The San Jose Business Journal reported that the investigators "identified and interviewed the person who took the phone" from the German bar where Gray Powell, the Apple engineer who lost the iPhone, was celebrating his birthday. The paper reported that an outside counsel for Apple, as well as the engineer who misplaced the phone reported the incident as a theft, but according to San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney the incident has not been treated as a crime. The investigation had been put on hold to determine whether Gawker Media, which owns Gizmodo, has the right to invoke California's shield law protecting journalists. Police seized four computers and two servers, plus several external hard drives, from Gizmodo editor Jason Chen last Friday night. According to a search warrant posted on Gizmodo.com, the computers may contain photographs of Apple's "prototype 4G iPhone," as well as email pertaining to its purchase, call records, and research on Gray Powell, the Apple engineer who purportedly misplaced the device. Chen said in a post on the Gizmodo website that he and his wife returned from having dinner out on Friday to find police searching their home. The paper's source also disputed the sale terminology, claiming that the $5,000 was something akin to a finder's fee. Wired also said that it had received an email from an individual on March 28 regarding the prototype iPhone, but "did not follow up on the exchange after the tipster made a thinly veiled request for money." So far, Engadget, Wired, and Gizmodo have acknowledged receiving contact from someone shopping pictures of the iPhone.

ARM Holdings, the company that creates the processors for most of the world’s mobile phones, including the iPhone and iPad, is now rumored to be sold to Apple. According to the London Evening Standard, ARM Holdings could be acquired for around $8 billion. Apple could pay cash for the company because they have $40 billion in cash reserves. An acquisition would give Apple greater control over the development of mobile processors and Apple could deny competitors access to ARM’s technology, including Android phones.

Apple is shutting down Lala.com, the online music service they purchased late last year and is rumored to be announcing a web version of iTunes. However, it's being reported that Apple has not talked to music executives about its plans and new music licensing deals haven't been set up. Several months before Apple bought Lala, the company demoed a working, but unapproved iPhone application that streamed songs instantly to the phone after a user spent 10 cents per song to house them in a digital locker on a server. The 10 cents is credited back if a customer buys a higher-quality, permanent download.</itunes:summary>

In this edition of the Digital Zone, we talked about:

	* Multi-tasking comes to the 'i' products
	* Palm rumored to be for sale
	* Microsoft announces their 'Kin'
	* Twitter announces free 'Virgin' advertising
	* Password changes are a waste of time
	* Netflix Wii discs coming to subscribers

Third-party multi-tasking is coming to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices. Steve Jobs made that announcement and said the company waited so long because it wanted to offer multitasking in a way that didn't drain the iPhone's battery or reduce the phone's performance. The iPhone 4.0 update will also include the ability to have messages from multiple e-mail accounts land in a single inbox and a way to connect an iPhone with a regular keyboard using Bluetooth wireless technology. The multitasking function won't work with the original iPhone or the iPhone 3G — only the 3GS versions that came out last summer and last year's iPod Touch. Jobs also announced an advertising platform called iAd in which Apple will sell and host ads to run on apps made by outside developers; those developers will get 60 percent of the ad revenue. Jobs said users shouldn't find the ads annoying because Apple will make it easy for people to navigate back to what they were doing before clicking. Apple has sold more than 50 million iPhones.

Palm is in trouble. It's being reported that the company has hired bankers to explore several options, including a sale of the company. The company is also looking at pursuing additional capital or an attempt to reach a licensing agreement for its WebOS phone operating system software. The potential asking price for Palm would be more than $1 billion because of the deep portfolio of patents. We reported a few weeks ago that Palm shipped a total of 960,000 smartphones in the February quarter, but only 408,000 of those went to consumers. HTC is one company looking at purchasing the company.

Microsoft announced their new 'Kin' phones, a design they came up with on their own and it comes six months before it rolls out its new Windows software for phones made by HTC. Called the Kin One and Kin Two, they're being built by Sharp and will be sold by Verizon. The new phones are aimed at the 15 - 25 crowd and will focus on combining feeds from Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Both of the new Kin phones have a touch screen, slide-out keyboard and camera. Kin One is smaller, designed to be used with only one hand, while Kin Two has a larger screen and keyboard, more memory and can record high-definition video. The phones incorporate Microsoft's Zune digital music player and FM radio and almost everything on the phone is stored by Microsoft in remote servers and accessible via the Internet from any Web browser called the Kin Studio. Kin automatically backs up text messages, call history, photos, videos and contacts, in an attempt to soothe fears of data loss that happened last October with their Sidekick phones.

Twitter announced it is introducing advertising by allowing companies to pay to have their messages show up first in searches on its site. The service will be called "Promoted Tweets." Twitter invited Virgin America to test the concept and won't pay anything for its promotional messages. Best Buy, Sony Pictures and Starbucks are among the other companies using Promoted Tweets.</itunes:summary>

In this edition of the Digital Zone, we talked about:

	* iPad hits the streets
	* iPad usage and buying habits
	* International iPad business
	* iPhone 4.0 announcement
	* Verizon confirms interest in iPhone
	* Netflix coming to several mobile devices
	* Blu-Ray ups capacity

Apple confirmed it sold 300,000 iPads in the U.S. as of midnight on Saturday, April 3. Apple included pre-orders, deliveries to channel partners, and sales at Apple retail stores. Apple also announced that iPad users downloaded more than one million apps from the App Store and more than 250,000 e-books from its iBookstore during the first day. In a related story, if you purchase an iPad, you will need to upgrade to iTunes 9.1.

According to one analyst, 7.5% of Amazon Kindle users are defecting to the iPad. Based on 448 interviews at Apple stores in New York City and Minneapolis, about 13 percent of iPad buyers already own a Kindle and just over half of those, or 7.5 percent of the total, were planning to replace Amazon's e-reader with Apple's. Exactly 10 percent had considered getting a Kindle but decided on an iPad instead. About 38 percent plan to read books; most, 74 percent, plan to view the web. E-mail and video are nearly even at 32 and 26 percent, but gaming and music were only 18 and 8 percent of the mix. Most of those gathered were logically existing Apple fans, with 74 percent of these Mac users and 66 percent already using an iPhone. Only four percent expected to stop using their computers and one percent their iPhones. Buyers were slightly skewed towards the 16GB model, at 39 percent, but larger capacities still had sway as 32 percent wanted a 32GB version and 28 percent were opting for the 64GB version.

The international demand for iPads is big business. One UK buyer is reported to have paid $5,500 to get an iPad, despite the fact that the country will receive native versions of the tablet later this month. Another buyer is said to have snapped up a 64GB iPad for $5,000, under the provision that it would be hand-delivered "anywhere in the world" on April 3rd.

In other Apple news, iPhone OS 4.0 is on the way and according to AppleInsider's anonymous sources, the new 4.0 interface will resemble the Expose feature in Mac OS which reveals all the open programs when the user double-clicks the iPhone's Home button. Moreover, pre-release builds of iPhone OS 4.0 show a global inbox that merges multiple e-mail accounts into a unified view, plus the ability to add specific contact names as icons on the iPhone's home screen. With GPS already in the Android phone, Apple could announce that GPS capabilities will be added because Apple acquired mapping company Placebase and posted a job ad last November seeking an engineer to help overhaul the iPhone's Maps app.

Verizon CEO said he told Apple that the company wants to carry the iPhone but declined to say when or even if the iPhone would be available on Verizon's network.

Netflix is coming to the iPhone and itouch according to a blog post by Netflix V.P. of corporate communications. There were no release dates announced in the post but confirmed that company is working on something. The post also said they want their service to be "ubiquitous" which obviously means they're working to have their service on several devices.

Microsoft just dropped the price of their Zune HD devices. The 64 GB model will now sell for $349.99 on April 12, which is $50 cheaper than the 64 GB iPod touch. The 32 and 16GB version of the Zune HD cost $269.99 and $199.99, respectively.

Information Week is reporting that The Blu-ray Disc Association is going to increase the capacity of its format.The next version of Blu-ray, BDXL, will let content companies put up to 128GB on a single disc and rewritable discs will have room for up to 100GB of data.</itunes:summary>

Slashdot is reporting that an internal Palm memo has been released showing support for Android to replace the webOS on the Palm Pre Plus. The memo cited competition with the iPhone and exponential growth from the Android operating system - specifically mentioning the Motorola Droid. The memo partially states: "While Palm is incredibly proud of our engineers who spent timeless work and effort to bring us this advanced operating system, consumers simply have not caught on. To provide a better future for ourselves and our customers, the only logical choice is to transition our hardware and software to the Android platform." WebOS won't officially go away (the UI and notifications feature into the Android platform) according to the memo. Software engineers are to begin working on Palm's own builds of Android as soon as the device maker officially joins the Open Handset Alliance, which other executives at Palm say could be as soon as next week.

Line2 has created an app that can make calls where AT&T's signal is weak and can turn an iPod Touch into a full-blown cellphone. The app gives an iPhone a second phone number -- a second phone line, complete with its own contacts list, voice mail, and so on. The company is betting users will distribute the Line2 number to business contacts and the regular iPhone number to friends and family and your second line can be an 800 number. The Line2 app looks like the iPhone's own phone software. Line2 also turns the iPhone into a dual-mode phone. That is, it can make and receive calls either using either the AT&T airwaves as usual, or over the Internet. Any time you're in a wireless hot spot, Line2 places its calls over Wi-Fi instead of AT&T's network. Line2 also runs on the iPod Touch which means if a person is in a Wi-Fi hot spot, the Touch is becomes a cell phone. The Line2 service costs $15 a month (after a 30-day free trial).

AdMob is reporting that online ad networks have seen an increase in traffic from Android-based phones, but the iPhone remains the dominant OS. AdMob said they examined worldwide traffic to its ad networks for February 2010 in three categories: smartphones, feature phones, and mobile Internet devices. The company found that smartphones account for 48 percent of its traffic, up from 35 percent the year before. In the U.S., the top smartphone was the iPhone, with 44.5 percent of the market. That was followed by the Motorola Droid at 15.2 percent, and the HTC Dream at 3.2 percent. For the record, Google is going to purchase AdMob. ComScore, on the other hand, found that RIM remained the dominant smartphone OS platform, at least in the United States, with 43 percent share versus 25.1 percent for Apple. Feature phones accounted for 35 percent of traffic, down from 58 percent last year, as more and more people switch to smartphones. The top feature phone manufacturers were Samsung, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and LG. Mobile Internet devices had 17 percent of the market, with the iPod touch consuming 93 percent of that traffic, followed by the Sony PSP and Nintendo DSi. AdMob found that 11 percent of smartphone users are interested in purchasing an Apple iPad.

In this edition of the Digital Zone, we talked about:

	* The new Heinz dip and squeeze ketchup packets
	* iPad 2.0
	* Amazon purchases a touch-screen company
	* iPhone market share starting to slip
	* Symbian gives away it's phone OS
	* Excessive internet usage
	* American love internet health research
	* AT&T says 'yes' to the Sling

New research shows the iPhone is actually starting to slip when it comes to smartphone market share. The new numbers come from ABI Research, an analytics firm that measures sales of smartphones from quarter to quarter and works with manufacturers to ensure its data is in line with the companies' own estimates. According to ABI, Apple's iPhone accounted for 18.1 percent of global smartphone sales in the third quarter of 2009. In the fourth quarter, that number dropped to 16.6 percent. The numbers say this is Apple's first quarter-to-quarter drop in smartphone market share in two years. The company seeing the biggest growth in the fourth quarter of '09, was Motorola which shot from nowhere up to 4 percent of the global market. ChangeWave Research found the number of people planning to buy an Android phone is going up while the iPhone is slowly slipping.

AT&T it will now allow the Sling Media television-viewing program for the iPhone to operate over its "3G" high-speed mobile network. The reversal comes as the Federal Communications Commission is drafting rules to keep broadband providers — including wireless companies — from favoring or discriminating against Internet traffic flowing over their networks. AT&T said last May it worried SlingPlayer Mobile would clog its network. Sling Media, which had been selling a Wi-Fi-only iPhone app, has submitted an updated version with 3G features for Apple's approval.

PCWorld.com is reporting the iPad is already undergoing some significant changes including an OS X-like Apple tablet, a camera slot for the iPad, and a Chrome OS tablet user interface. According to anonymous sources who spoke to TechCrunch, this version of the tablet would purportedly run on an Intel chip, have a touchscreen that would be as large as 15.4-inches (diagonal)--the same size as the 15-inch MacBook Pro. The rumored MacPad would not necessarily run a full-fledged version of OS X, but its operating system would be closer to OS X than to the iPhone OS and there could be some annoucements as early as this year's Worldwide Developers Conference. One of the biggest complaints about the iPad is that it didn't include a webcam and that they ditched the idea at the last minute.

Amazon has reportedly purchased touch-screen company Touchco, according to the New York Times. The Times said Touchco has a touch-based technology that is cheaper to produce than those found in Apple's products, and is also sensitive to different levels of pressure.

The Symbian Foundation said they are making the cell phone software for free for anyone to use and said the software is used on more than 330 million phones around the world.

People who spend a lot of time surfing the internet are more likely to show signs of depression according to British scientists. Psychologists from Leeds University found what they said was "striking" evidence that some avid net users develop compulsive internet habits in which they replace real-life social interaction with online chat rooms and social networking sites and can have a serious impact on mental health.</itunes:summary>

	* The iPad
	* Other Apple tidbits revealed during the presentation

Apple will sell the newly unveiled tablet-style iPad starting at $499, a price tag far below the $1,000 that some analysts were expecting. The iPad which is larger than the iPhone was billed by Steve Jobs as "so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone."

The iPad has a 9.7-inch touch screen, is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage. The basic iPad models will cost $499, $599 and $699, depending on the storage size. All models have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity built in. Jobs said the device has a battery that lasts 10 hours and can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.

Apple will also sell a version with pay-as-you-go data plans from AT&T in the U.S. Two tiers of data plan will be available without contracts: $14.99 per month for 250 megabytes of data, or $29.99 for unlimited data usage. Those 3G models will cost more — $629, $729 and $829, depending on the amount of memory. The Wi-Fi only version will be available worldwide in March, and the 3G version in April. International cellular data details have not yet been announced.

Jobs said the iPad will also be better for playing games and watching video than either a laptop or a smart phone. The iPad comes with software including a calendar, maps, a video player and iPod software for playing music. Applications designed for the iPhone can run on the iPad. Apple is also releasing updated tools for software developers to help them build iPhone and iPad programs.
